Chargers visit Titans in battle of hot teams
By Hank Harris • Dec 23rd, 2009 • Category: NFLWeek 16 of the NFL season features a Christmas Day game – and what a matchup it is.
The red-hot San Diego Chargers take on the almost-as-hot Tennessee Titans on Friday (8:20 pm ET, NFL Network).
The Titans are 3-point favorites in NFL Betting Odds.
San Diego is 11-3 SU but still has a lot to play for against the surging Titans (7-7 SU) when these two teams square off in a rare Christmas Day game.
Both the Chargers and Titans have been among the hottest teams in the NFL, as the Titans have won seven of their last eight and San Diego has won nine straight going into Friday’s game.
And it should be noted that the Chargers have not been beating tomato cans, either. San Diego has won five straight against opponents with winning records, including wins at Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, and New York Giants. As well, San Diego has home wins over Philadelphia Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals.
The Chargers are 6-3 ATS during their current win-streak, and have finished over the total in 4 of their last 6 games.
Tennessee, meanwhile, lost six straight to start the 2009 season, and appeared to be a write off. But the Titans turned it around after losing 0-59 to New England, when they inserted Vince Young back into the starting line-up. They proceeded to win seven of their next eight games, and went 5-3 ATS.
But they are on a stretch where they’ve lost three of their last four against the spread. The Titans have won just 1 game against an opponent with a winning record this season.
There has been talk about the Chargers not having much to play for, and going to Tennessee to play a very physical Titans team. The Chargers’ will should not be up for debate, and they still have to lock up the AFC’s second-seed playoff spot.
The Titans will look to play spoiler for another week, and continue to hold onto that slight chance they have to reach the playoffs. This should be a good one!
